Josiah’s Feeding Issues

Sundays in the Hall household over the past number of months have followed a similar pattern. Getting ready to go to church – getting everyone ready, making sure Josiah was fed in enough time so that he wouldn’t throw up – but late enough that we didn’t have to creep out of the service early to feed him again (we generally feed him every three hours so that he can get enough calories throughout the day.

However most Sundays the pattern is this – it is just time for everyone to get in the car and either as soon as we place Josiah in his car seat or a block away from the house the whole of his previous feed is deposited over Shari/Myself/Himself/the back of the car – not a pleasant experience.

And this is simply a microcosm of what a typical day is like – trying to get enough calories in our preemie so that he continues to grow while at the same time he continues to refuse feeding by mouth and also continues to spit up much of what he has eaten.

Much of this behaviour for Josiah is learnt – from the earliest days as a baby under two pounds he was intubated with a breathing tube and thereafter much of his oral activity has been a negative experience – is it any wonder that he now has an oral aversion.

Which is why we today travelled from Kansas City to San Francisco to a place called the Los Altos Feeding Clinic to get Josiah off the feeding tube and feeding on solid foods.

The journey was really good – a three hour flight to San Francisco with lots of baby gear went without a hitch – the staff at Midwest Airlines and Alamo Car Rental were very generous with us

Tomorrow the feeding begins….

Josiah – 7 months on

Many of people have been asking for an update on our little Josiah. We have much to be thankful for

This week Josiah was 7 months old (4 months adjusted) and he has now reached 13 lbs – which is quite an achievement for a little guy who started life under 800grams (1lb 12oz). Some of the things that we were praying for were his eyes – he had a condition known as ROP – which if left unchecked can result in blindness. He was being checked by the eye doctor regularly – however a few weeks ago he was given the all clear – we have to go back for checks once a year – but the danger presented by ROP now no longer exists – Praise God.

He is a healthy happy baby and we are so thankful for everyone who has stood with us for his healing.

There are still a few small issues with reflux – which can drive Shari crazy when he only eats 1-2oz of milk – so if you can pray for his continued growth and that he would overcome the reflux that would be great.

Also I am so thankful for my wonderful wife who pumps milk, cleans bottles and feeds a baby every 2 hours (yes, before you ask Daddy does take his turn as well walking the boards in the middle of the night), but this is a full time occupation at the moment for Shari and she is doing amazingly – please keep her and us all in your prayers.

Every Blessing

Two weeks later

So we brought Josiah home two weeks ago and a number of people are asking for an update on the blog…

Well the reason I haven’t blogged is because the last two weeks have been a crazy time of doing live tv – the weekend that we brought him home we did a live link with Lou Engle on the Saturday Night, then several live links with Rory and Wendy from GOD TV throughout Saturday night and Sunday Morning – and then on Sunday night we launched live 24/7 tv from the prayer room and officially launched our Media Apprenticeship.

Added to this I’ve been trying to get a cute picture of Josiah and I haven’t yet so I’ll post the one that I have.

Basically the update with Josiah is this – today he was 5lbs 8oz – Which is good news – over the last two weeks he has put on a lb. This is the concern that he would grow. He has continued to go to the eye doctor over the past couple of weeks and they are continuing monitoring him for ROP – which is still active.

Beyond that – we are experiencing the life of newborn parents – Josiah pretty much feeds every 2-3 hours, so we are up quite a bit in the night especially if he is gassy and doesn’t settle between feedings.

We are also trying to deal with the implications of paying all the hospital bills – which is a bit daunting, but we know that God is able to provide more abundantly.

Evey Blessing

Coming Home!

Today is a big day in the life of Josiah Hall – after three months in the hospital he is coming home. Thank you for all the prayers and support during this season.

Shari and I have just spent a rather sleepless night in a hospital “Parent Care” Room with a very hungry little man and this morning the Dr came round and released us. Last night he put on 45 grams (1.5 oz) – He is now just a little under 4lb 9oz and so they have agreed to let him come home.

We still appreciate your prayers for all the issues I have mentioned in previous blogs that we will address as he grows – but today we are joyful at the homecoming of our little boy

Lots of love

Josiah Update

Today we got a call from Children’s Mercy to say that Josiah had been transferred to the General ward out of the ICN. Due to staff defections at Research Medical Center after the sacking of Dr. William Topper – the NICU there has had to transfer their babies to other facilities. Josiah’s first days of life were spent at Research and Dr.Topper was not only the guy who oversaw the NICU, but he was also Josiah’s doctor and we only have good things to say about him. He was a good doctor and his staff loved him – so it doesn’t come as a surprise that 9 out of the 13 Nurse Practitioners left with him. However many of the babies had to be transferred to Children’s Mercy and as a result they moved some of the more stable babies to the general ward and Josiah was one. It means we get a private room – but the down side is that we don’t get to keep our primary nurse carers – so Kristy and Jessica if you are reading this – please come and visit – we are room 13 on 3Henson.

On Monday Josiah was weaned completely off oxygen support, and he has been doing well. The reason he is still in the hospital is because he is having problems with eating or rather putting on the weight – I think last night he was a few grams lighter than the same time last week – still 4lbs 7oz. They are trying to fortify his feedings with fortifiers at first 22Cal and then 24 Cal – however it appears that Josiah hates the flavor – he eats really well usually and not nurses with Shari 3 times a day – but he doesn’t much like the bottles with the fortifiers.

I think Josiah will probably come home next week if he can slowly put on a few more ounces.

He is doing great and for this we praise the Father in heaven – however there are a few things that you continue to agree with us in prayer

1) He needs to gain weight – he seems to have quite a bit of pain from stomach cramping which keeps him fussing – he needs to have peaceful sleep and peaceful feedings.

2) He remains at risk from ROP – there is no change here as of yet – so pray his eyes will be healed and whole

3) Pray for his leg and arm muscles – that they would become more supple – we are working with them to stretch them

Thank you

Lots of Love

Jono and Shari

Thoughts at a Hospital Bed

These last few months have been somewhat crazy for me. At IHOP we are ramping up to launch 180 hours a week of tv production – yes I know there are only 168 hours in a week! Added to this everyday I have been coming into the hospital. I really want to come and see my son, however coming into the hospital is somewhat of an arduous procedure. Driving 25 mins to Downtown Kansas City then coming into Children’s Mercy – which, although one of the best children’s hospitals in the US is a little city in itself, coming through two security checkpoints and signing in twice is rather a procedure. The questions are the same everyday “What’s the name of the child?” I answer “Hall” they (always) reply “How do you spell that?” There is a very funny little black lady that chastised me for my English “You gotta get with the program… you been here 31/2 years… you gotta speak like this” I have complied and can speak in a KC Afro American accent reasonably well – much to her delight!

Then onto the Intensive Care Nursery, where after signing in you must perform a 3 minute scrub. The nurses here at the ICN have been great, there are over 180 nurses on the unit and they rotate around 60 beds – We were a little alarmed at first as the same nurse would never see Josiah, however now he has two great primary nurses – Kristy on the weekends and Jessica in the evenings. Josiah is in a room with one other room mate, this week his long term room mate Andrew was discharged and he has welcomed the sixth room mate to the little pod.

In the midst of all the work at IHOP and the intense periods at Children’s Mercy, we have had quite a Job season – The sewage backed up into the basement, the transmission on my truck broke, followed by breaks, followed by dead batteries and oil leaks on the car. Then my computer completely crashed – I had to completely reformat the whole thing. Then the hospital bills mmmm…. Last week I was informed by a nice lady from Georgia that we had to pay them at least $550 per month for the next 3 years or be taken to the collectors – that was a nice telephone conversation!!

So it has been an interesting season to say the least – and what have I been learning?

1) The Power of Words

How did God create? He spoke and it existed. We too are created in his image and must understand the vast power that we have in our tongues. In the Bible, James calls it a small rudder that controls a ship – we know that we have to speak wholesome talk, however, do we truly know the power that is in the tongue? It seems that Proverbs understood that there is the power of life and death in the tongue. There are many, many scriptures which back up this claim. Even outside of the Bible a non-Christian scientist has discovered the power of blessing – check out http://www.hado.net – A Japanese Scientist’s discoveries in the power of blessing water and cursing water.

It makes you think a little about Jesus cursing the fig tree and also speaking healing over people. This was true for the early church too – They didn’t pray for healing in the New Testament – the apostles commanded healing. They heard the Spirit of God and they spoke with the authority that God had given them.

It also makes me think about prophecy in a different way – Prophecy is not some sort of fortune telling – a foretelling about a future event – although there are definitely some elements of that could be confused as foretelling. Rather it is a forthtelling – calling forth that which is not into existence. This gives us more confidence when we speak the heart of God over people.

This is one of the things that I have been learning as I have been increasing my team from 10-60 people, as I have been filming many programmes, as I have been digging a big 10 foot hole to fix my sewer.

2) The Power of Blood

We talk about the power of the Blood of Jesus, there is much in the Bible about Life being in the blood, however it has struck me recently the massive importance of blood and hematology (the study of blood). The main things that they have been tracking with Josiah have been his blood oxygenation levels and also his blood labs indicate how he is doing with reference to the acidity or alkalinity of his body, but also with reference to the amount of CO2, the amount of all different types of minerals. When Josiah got sick – it was a close monitoring of his blood that revealed how to treat him. It amazes me how true the statement is that there is life and death in the blood.

Josiah Update

For all those asking how our little boy is here’s the latest.

In the last few days he has started bottle feeding again – and he is doing well – they are increasing the milk every 12 hours and decreasing his IV feed. He was very uncomfortable for the last 3 days before feeding – probably for 2 reasons Firstly he was probably hungry and secondly they weaned his pain killer Fentanyl which we discovered is a narcotic with an analgesic potency 80 times that of morphine – no wonder he was a little cranky!

The events of this week have been

1) His eye exam shows he is still dealing with ROP at Zone 2, Stage 2 – So please pray for his eyes

2) He was shaking quite alot last week so they were talking about seizures or cerebral palsy – however the head ultrasound came back clear – and we are believing that the shaking was largely down to withdrawal from the Fentanyl – however he has got tight muscle tone – His arms don’t extend fully – so he is being worked at with the Occupational Therapist so he doesn’t have any problems crawling – Pray for this.

3) He is increasing feedings and decreasing oxygen support so pray that this will continue

For those interested in his weight, last night he was 4lb 7oz – So he is putting on weight

Again thank you for all your prayers and support

This has been a particularly busy week for me as we shot the first 5 GOD TV Daily Devotional Programmes on Monday.

Blessings

Jono
